The Silver Coast of Portugal is known for its breathtaking beaches, historic towns, and laid-back lifestyle—but perhaps one of its best-kept secrets is its incredible cuisine. Rooted in tradition and inspired by the Atlantic Ocean and rich agricultural lands, the food of the Silver Coast offers a flavoursome journey through Portugal’s culinary heritage.
From fresh seafood to hearty stews and irresistible pastries, the region’s gastronomy is as diverse as its landscape.
Must-try dishes
Grilled Sardines (Sardinhas Assadas): A summertime favourite, these are typically cooked over open flames and served with potatoes and salad. Simple, smoky, packed with Omega 3 and delicious.
Arroz de Marisco: a traditional Portuguese dish of soupy, flavorful rice simmered with tomatoes, herbs, and a mix of fresh shellfish like clams, shrimp, and mussels, enjoyed as one of the country’s most iconic and celebrated culinary specialties. In São Martinho do Porto, where our office is based, we recommend A Nova Gaivota, or Aki-d'el-Mar in Nazaré.
Leitão (Roast Suckling Pig): While famously associated with nearby Bairrada, you’ll find this succulent dish served at many local celebrations and eateries across the Silver Coast.
Chouriço and Presunto: Cured meats are a staple, often served as appetizers with local bread and cheeses. Smoky, salty, and full of character.
Octopus (Polvo): Whether grilled or braised in olive oil and garlic, octopus is a delicacy. Look out for "Polvo à Lagareiro" for a true Portuguese experience. Though its origins are uncertain, it’s popular throughout Portugal and comes in different preparations.
Migas: A rustic side dish made from day-old bread, garlic, and seasonal greens or meats. It’s a hearty nod to Portugal’s countryside cooking.
Pastel de Nata: These famous custard tarts are available throughout the country.
Pão de Ló: A soft sponge cake that’s slightly underbaked in the center, Pão de Ló de Alfeizerão is a local specialty you must try. If you are out on viewings in Alfeizerão , we recommend a stop at Casa Pão de Ló.
Cavacas: Crunchy on the outside and soft inside, these sugary treats from Caldas da Rainha are perfect with an afternoon coffee.
