If you enjoy wine tasting, this article is for you! We would like to share our tips for three distinct wineries—each offering a unique experience through wine, history, and environment.
Quinta do Sanguinhal – A Heritage Haven in Bombarral
Near Óbidos, Quinta do Sanguinhal is a family-run estate with winemaking roots dating back to the early 20th century. Owned by the Pereira da Fonseca family, this historic vineyard spans over 95 hectares and produces a wide range of wines, fortified wines, and brandy under labels including Quinta do Sanguinhal DOC Óbidos and Sôttal.
The Sanguinhal Guided Estate Tour & Meal offers visitors the chance to wander through the charming 19th-century gardens and vineyards, explore an old distillery and visit the ageing cellar. Guided tasting tours include tasting of five wines and includes a buffet featuring local produce. We also note from their website that they can cater for special menus, such as intolerances - though we recommend checking with them when booking. The tasting tour is a truly immersive blend of history, craftsmanship, and flavour.

Quinta dos Capuchos – A Serene Estate Between Mountains and Vineyards
Perched at the edge of the Serra dos Candeeiros in Alcobaça, Quinta dos Capuchos is an early-20th-century estate built in 1918 and enriched with historic charm and traditional architecture. The winery has been owned by the same family since 1925.
As well as offering tours, they also offer accommodation, which makes for a peaceful escape.
Their vineyards—spanning 12 hectares—grow classic Portuguese grape varieties: reds like Touriga Nacional, Castelão, Syrah, Aragonez, Cabernet Sauvignon, and whites such as Arinto, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Visitors can enjoy guided experiences like the Grande Escolha Tour, where you’ll visit the vineyard, the cellar, and enjoy tastings accompanied by traditional snacks.
If you enjoy your tasting, be sure to visit their cellar shop, where you can find some limited editions and new wines available for purchase.
If you are looking for a place to host a special event, this is a location worth checking out too!

Vinhos Cortém – Organic and Innovative in Every Bottle
If you're seeking something modern and sustainable, look no further than Vinhos Cortém, an organic boutique winery crafting innovative wines like “orange wine” (white wine fermented with grape skins). Their focus is on purity—hand-harvested grapes, minimal sulphites, no additives, and no filtration.
Located just a few kilometers from Caldas da Rainha, this vineyard is easily accessible as part of a day trip.
Cortém is now part of the Lindeborg Wines Groups, which has meant investment in the vineyard - though it still maintains its artisan style. Their wines have won awards at prestigious wine competitions like the International Wine Challenge, Mundus Vini, and Berliner Wine Trophy. Their unique style and organic approach make Cortém a compelling destination for adventurous palates.
